Professor Razavi steps down as AI Centre Director

Professor Reza Razavi has announced he is stepping down as the Director of the AI Centre for Value Based Healthcare to focus on a new AI healthcare spin-out company.

Professor Razavi has led the Centre for five years since its inception in February 2019. During this time the AI Centre has grown to incorporate four universities, ten NHS Hospital trusts and seventeen industry partners.

Professor Razavi will continue to work at the forefront of AI healthcare in research with his new spin-out company, Fraiya, that is developing AI tools to transform obstetric ultrasound.

The directorship of the Centre will transfer to Professor Sebastien Ourselin, the Head of the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences at King’s College London.

Professor Ourselin has been the Centre’s long-standing deputy-director and instrumental in the success of the Centre’s AI innovation and implementation.

The London AI Centre for Valued Based Healthcare is a great example of how bringing the NHS, universities, and business together to address the key challenges of healthcare using innovative AI technologies can have real impact with many successful protypes and products already created across many clinical pathways. I am grateful to the wonderful colleagues across the different organisations in making the Centre a success and particularly for the infrastructure that has now been put in place across our NHS partners including AI Deployment Engine and the Federated Learning and Interoperability Platform. Moving forward I am glad that Prof Sebastien Ourselin, who has contributed so much already as deputy director, is now taking on the leadership to build on the partnerships and infrastructure in place with exciting plans for the future.

Thanks to Professor Razavi’s guidance, the AI Centre has become an essential part of the St Thomas’ MedTech Hub with its focus on how medical AI can optimise healthcare systems and resources, deliver value-based healthcare for the NHS, and faster diagnosis and personalised therapies for patients.

Professor Ourselin will also lead the newly established King’s Health Partners Digital Health Hub which will continue the work to develop transformational MedTech research and innovation.
