About the fellowship programme

Clinicians with expertise in Artificial Intelligence are essential to the rollout of AI software in hospitals. In order to fully realise the UK government's goal of being a global AI superpower, the NHS must provide dedicated training for clinicians in cutting-edge skills required for clinical AI deployment (as recommended in the Topol Review). To date there has been no formal or systematic route to acquire skills in clinical AI deployment. 

This fellowship addresses this training need.  It is a year-long programme which is integrated part-time alongside the medical training of doctors approaching consultancy.  Fellows undertake immersive AI projects in live hospital workflows, supervised by world experts in clinical AI. 

Fellows gain further skills and knowledge from a programme of teaching aligned with the Clinical AI Curriculum developed by Guy's & St Thomas' Department of Medical Physics.

This ground-breaking fellowship was created by the London AI Centre and supported by Health Education England.  We are pleased to confirm that an independent educational evaluation was been commissioned from the Health Innovation Network for the inaugural cohort.

  • Sarah Blake

    This fellowship is an amazing opportunity for clinicians to gain skills in AI. Simply put by Professor Sir John Bell: "AI could save the NHS". I hope to gain understanding of AI in healthcare and apply it in practice, specifically in modernising clinical trials and extracting information from the vast NHS databases. Following the fellowship, I’d like to develop and integrate improved AI-driven systems to interpret cardiac imaging.

    I aim to harness the power of AI in improving patient outcomes via early diagnosis, treatment, stratification, and optimisation of post treatment care. I look forward to being a future leader in the roll out of AI across the UK to provide higher-quality, faster, more cost-effective patient care nationwide. I feel blessed and honoured to work and learn from world leaders and extremely clever people at the AI Centre.

    Anaesthesia is the largest hospital-based specialty, and there will be tremendous value for the NHS in equipping anaesthetists like myself with AI expertise. This fellowship in clinical AI offers an integrated training pathway to knowledge and expertise that will be essential for my ideal Consultant role: delivering world-class care whilst building AI-augmented services that improve patient care and reduce staff workload.

    Not only am I an avid advocate for value-based healthcare, I also believe in prioritising patient-centred outcome measures through the development of Machine Learning models, which are valuable in supporting shared decision-making. I am proud to be able to leverage my clinical, academic and policy experience by taking innovative approaches to transform healthcare.

    I am very much looking forward to joining this programme. This Fellowship will allow me to learn about AI in a live clinical setting, understand the hurdles and possibilities of this bleeding edge technology. I see this opportunity as a stepping stone towards understanding the technology further and how it may be utilised to streamline the clinical workflow within Emergency Departments and benefit the critically ill.

    I am interested in global health, equity and digital health. I have worked at NHS Digital, where I was clinical lead on projects such as COVID-19 Risk Stratification, Shielding, and Oximetry @home. These projects have made me realise the potential for digital health, to improve patients’ lives as well as supporting clinicians. I hope this fellowship will build on these experiences to improve patient and staff experience.

    I am very excited about this new opportunity to develop skills in Clinical AI and utilise my previous background in Computer Science. As a Clinical Radiology SpR expertise in this area will be very relevant to my ongoing clinical practice, with the usage of AI applications within diagnostic imaging workflows being inevitable, and I also hope to develop the skills to advise and lead on AI projects in the future.

    I am developing a clinical AI decision support system which enhances the acquisition of cardiac MRI. Translating AI science into practice is challenging; this Fellowship will give me a transferable skillset for deploying and implementing such projects. Looking ahead, I’d like to take on a hybrid cardiologist-data scientist role in the NHS and assist in delivering the AI Roadmap.
